Key concerns to address
- Section 2.3 and Figure 1: reload the archived Gkeyll fluid moments at t=0 and compare them with the PIC moments, instead of comparing against the initializer prescription alone.
- Section 2.2 and Table 1: compare the moment current against OSIRIS's native deposited current over the full sheet profile, not only the two cells adjoining Y=16 d_e, and report sensitivity to the staggering and x-averaging choices.
- Section 2.1: quantitatively explain why the archived mean speed (0.441c) falls below the cold proper-velocity value (0.447c) under finite-temperature boosted loading, and confirm that the full posted deck contains no use_classical_uadd override.
- Reference [2] and Appendix A: cite both Zenodo identifiers (21114117 and 21114116), stating which is the version DOI and which is the concept DOI, and verify the full-archive checksum rather than partial ZIP members only (Section 7).
- Section 3: test whether the overstable mode persists with the inhomogeneous current-sheet equilibrium, sheet-compatible wavenumbers, magnetization or relativistic corrections, or else demote the claim about the source's linear-growth statement accordingly.
- Sections 2.4 and 8: perform at least one matched-initial-state rerun to establish the dynamical significance of the mismatch, and condense Section 4, whose point is standard continuum kinematics, so the strongest findings are prioritized.
Message to authors
Thank you for a carefully scoped and reproducible audit; the decision is major revision. The reviewers found the exact mixture identities, the rational Penrose bound (Eq. 7), the linear system (Eq. 8) and Proposition 5.1 sound. However, the initial-state mismatch in Section 2 is not yet independently corroborated. It relies on two cells, on a fluid prescription rather than archived fluid output, and on a moment current rather than OSIRIS's native deposited current. The finite-temperature speed deficit below the cold prediction also needs explanation. The Section 3 overstable mode is shown only in a homogeneous reduction, and neither finding has an established effect on the audited nonlinear comparison. Please also resolve the Zenodo identifier discrepancy in reference [2]. A revision that corroborates Section 2 against archived fluid output and native currents, and that includes a matched-state rerun or a sheet-geometry stability test, would substantially strengthen the case for publication.
Rationale
Verdict: major revision. The analytical components are rigorous, but the central initial-state claim rests on incompletely corroborated reanalysis, and the paper does not establish whether either main finding matters for the audited comparison.
Decisive points: All three reviewers recommend major revision, and their grounded findings agree. On the OSIRIS proper-velocity reading in Section 2.1, Reviewers 1 and 3 quote the udist and units pages (u' = γv/c, with the thermal momentum boosted by the fluid momentum). This outweighs Reviewer 2's 'conflicting' verdict, which rests on an informal input-file comment. The reference [2] dispute is resolvable rather than disqualifying: Reviewer 3 shows that doi:10.5281/zenodo.21114117 resolves and contains the quoted vfl definition, while Reviewer 2 shows the deposit is also cited as 21114116. The persuasive unresolved concerns are these: the Table 1 and Section 2.3 numbers are unverified by any reviewer and rest on two cells. The current comparison omits OSIRIS's native deposited current. The pressure comparison uses the fluid initializer prescription rather than the archived fluid output. The archived mean speed (0.441c) is below even the cold proper-velocity prediction (0.447c), and this is not explained. The Section 3 mode is shown only in a homogeneous electrostatic reduction (Reviewers 1, 2, 3).
What would change the decision: corroborate Section 2 against the archived fluid output and the native deposited current over the full sheet profile; explain the finite-temperature speed deficit; and either perform a matched-state rerun or show that the overstable mode survives in the sheet geometry.
