Key concerns to address
- Section 6: obtain the Fig. 6 cohort, or a documented subsample with weights, from the source authors and report matched first-passage versus left, right and symmetric full-history regional fractions, giving both particle-mean and energy-weighted estimands.
- Section 4: reproduce lines 344-403 of the pinned tracer_functions.py in an appendix so readers can verify the first-passage semantics directly from the manuscript.
- Section 4: state what evidence, such as author correspondence or file history, links the December 2025 routine to the program that produced preprint Figs. 6 and 8-11, or narrow the claim to the posted script.
- Section 7 and reference [9]: provide a resolvable persistent archive for the audit code and data, since the Zenodo DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23774456 could not be verified.
- Section 3: identify a source for the t/5, D/25 and Gaussian-filter display transformations beyond a fit to digitized artwork, or label them explicitly as inferred.
- Sections 3 and 5: move the field-identity, guide-profile, caption and proxy-normalization checks to an appendix so the attribution finding and its measured population impact lead the paper.
Message to authors
Thank you for a careful and unusually well-scoped audit. The reviewers agree that your first-passage analysis and counterexample (Section 4, Appendix A) are correct. However, the manuscript does not yet show that the issue changes any published quantity, and a methods comment at this venue needs that demonstration. Please do the following:
- Execute the reanalysis protocol of Section 6 on the Fig. 6 cohort, or a documented and weighted subsample.
- Print the audited routine in the manuscript.
- Clarify its provenance relative to the v1 figures.
- Provide a verifiable archive for your own code.
- Justify the inferred display transformations in Section 3.
- Condense the ancillary checks.
If the cohort data cannot be obtained, explain what was requested and from whom. A measured effect, of either sign, would substantially strengthen the contribution.
Rationale
Verdict: major revision. The core mathematical finding is sound, but its significance for the audited work is undemonstrated, and that falls short of the journal bar.
Decisive points:
- All three reviewers accept the Section 4 and Appendix A analysis. The first-passage outputs telescope regardless of the intermediate labels (Proposition 1). The zero-transition-increment trace is a valid counterexample to reading those outputs as regional work.
- Reviewers 1 and 3 persuasively note that the only population-relevant question, how the Fig. 6 fractions change under a full-history ledger, is left unmeasured (Sections 6 and 8). Section 3 states the deposit offers further data on request, so this gap is closable.
- Reviewer 3 correctly notes that the function's lines 344-403 are not printed. The manuscript's central empirical claim therefore cannot be inspected from the paper.
- Reviewer 3 also correctly notes that the code postdates the preprint, so the eight-value match in Section 4 is not a hash-identified execution of the Fig. 6 cohort.
- Reviewer 1's claim that the OSF DOI does not resolve is contradicted by Reviewers 2 and 3, whose fetched evidence shows the record by Velberg dated 2025-12-05. The Zenodo DOI [9] remains unverified.
- Reviewer 1's request for full-history values on the four trajectories is already met by the Section 4 endpoint table, so I discount it.
What would change the decision: execute the Section 6 protocol on the Fig. 6 cohort or a documented, weighted subsample. Report first-passage versus full-history fractions under both estimands. Print the audited routine and establish its provenance relative to v1. With these, the comment would carry a measured, not hypothetical, consequence.
