Key concerns to address
- Abstract, Sections 1 and 7: audit the open-access QST 11, 025015 (2026) text and add a table stating, for each finding in Sections 4–5, whether it persists, was corrected, or was altered in the version of record.
- Sections 4.1 and 5.1–5.5: quote verbatim each audited statement (Theorem III.4 paragraph and footnote 10, Appendix B opening, Eqs. (A15)–(A16), (5), (17), (39), (43), (A5), (A10)) alongside the counterexample that refutes it.
- Section 4.2: state precisely what is new relative to commutator-scaling Trotter theory [6], or reframe the O(N) bound (10)–(12) explicitly as an application, and address whether it holds under the compactly supported, non-periodic-seam data the audited paper assumes.
- Sections 4.2 and 6: derive or tabulate the provenance of the multi-digit values (commutator norms 67.8300–1782.5930, the 1.2537e-4 splitting error, the Figure 7 magnitudes), including matrix-norm definitions and tolerances, rather than deferring them to the repository.
- Section 7: deposit the code and data snapshot in a permanent DOI-minting archive, since reviewers could not verify the GitHub repository or commit 1fb4be68.
- Section 4.1: either complete the corrected time-step theorem with explicit time-dependent constants, or state plainly that the original Theorem III.4 conclusion is unproven under the corrected regularity estimate (7)–(8).
Message to authors
Thank you for a careful and appropriately restrained audit. The decision is major revision. Your exact counterexamples, notably the shear flow in Eqs. (4)–(5) and the controlled-SWAP identity in Eq. (14), are clear and checkable. However, two reviewers cite publisher metadata marking the Quantum Science and Technology version as open access, which contradicts your inaccessibility statement. A comment restricted to a superseded preprint cannot be judged significant until you report which errors survive in the version of record. In revision, please:
- audit the journal text;
- quote each audited statement verbatim;
- clarify what in Section 4.2 goes beyond known commutator-scaling bounds;
- document the provenance of the numerical values in Sections 4.2 and 6;
- archive the code permanently.
If the key errors persist in the journal version and are documented this way, the comment would merit reconsideration.
Rationale
Verdict: major revision. The mathematical corrections appear sound, but the submission audits a superseded preprint that its own evidence base shows to be accessible in its version of record. As written, its significance cannot be judged.
Decisive points: Reviewers 2 and 3 cite the IOP metadata page, which states that the QST article (11, 025015, 2026) is "Open access". That conflicts with Section 1's claim that the full text was inaccessible. Reviewer 1's evidence also shows journal full-text content retrieved through the DOI. A comment confined to arXiv v2 therefore does not establish whether any error persists in the version of record, and that question determines its archival value.
Reviewer 3 is persuasive on two further points. The novel analytical content is limited: Section 4.2 itself disclaims priority for the commutator identity and calls the splitting estimate a standard Duhamel argument. And Sections 4.1 and 5 refute paraphrases without quoting the printed statements, so every fact-checker marked the attributions to Theorem III.4 and Appendix B not_enough_evidence. The exact counterexamples in Eqs. (4)–(5) and (14) are checkable by hand. Reviewer 1's minor_revision does not address the version-of-record issue.
What would change the decision: an audit of the open-access journal text reporting, item by item, which errors persist. Also needed are verbatim quotations of each audited statement, derivations or tabulated provenance for the numerical values, and an archived code deposit. Errors that are already corrected in the journal version would substantially reduce the case for publication.
